Strong Earthquake rattles Afghanistan claining 9 lives & injuring many , tremors felt in Pakistan, North India
A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has claimed the lives of at least nine people and left many others injured. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the tremor, which struck just after midnight on Sunday, measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the magnitude as 6. The quake was followed by multiple aftershocks, at least two of which measured 5.0, shaking large parts of Afghanistan as well as areas of Pakistan, India’s Jammu and Kashmir, and the Delhi-NCR region.
The epicentre was located near Jalalabad in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, at a depth of eight kilometres. The quake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time on Sunday, corresponding to 12:47 a.m. IST. A spokesperson for Nangarhar’s Public Health Department confirmed that nine people have been killed so far, and at least 25 others were injured and taken to local hospitals.
The first aftershock, measuring 4.5, occurred 20 minutes after the main tremor at a depth of 10 kilometres. It was followed by a 4.3-magnitude tremor at 1:59 a.m. IST, a 5.0-magnitude quake at 3:03 a.m., and another of the same magnitude at 5:16 a.m. These aftershocks originated from depths between 10 and 40 kilometres.
Nangarhar province lies along the Pakistan border, about 202 kilometres from Kabul. The quake was felt widely across northern India and parts of Pakistan. In Delhi and nearby areas, many residents rushed out of their homes during the night, sharing their experiences on social media.
This incident follows a devastating earthquake of similar strength (6.3 magnitude) that struck Afghanistan on October 7, 2023. That quake flattened large swathes of the country, destroying numerous homes. The Taliban government initially reported more than 4,000 deaths, although the United Nations later estimated the toll at just over 1,500.
