Sri Lanka Crush Bangladesh, Super Four Path Tough for Tigers in Asia Cup '25
Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the Super Four in the Asia Cup 2025 suffered a huge setback after they were outplayed by Sri Lanka, who secured a dominant six-wicket victory on Saturday.
Batting first, Bangladesh managed only 139 runs in 20 overs, a total that proved far below par once Sri Lanka began their chase. The island nation wrapped up the target in just 14.4 overs, losing only four wickets on their way to victory.
Bangladesh’s batting frailties, evident even in their opening win against Hong Kong, were again on display. Captain Liton Das, expected to anchor the innings, failed to deliver a defining knock. He scored 28 off 26 balls, but by then the collapse had already begun. Bangladesh lost both their openers for 0 due to some fast & straight hostile quick bowling from Thusara & Chameera . Later Das tried to repair the damage but he was dismissed by Hasaranga. It was only thanks to the late resistance from Jaker Ali (41) and Shamim Hossain (42) that Bangladesh managed to post something respectable. Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept the Tigers in check, with Wanindu Hasaranga starring by taking 2 wickets for 25 runs, supported ably by the rest of the attack.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost opener Kusal Mendis (3) early, but there was no panic. Pathum Nissanka (50) and Kamil Mishara (46) batted with authority & played eye catching shots , putting Bangladesh’s bowlers under constant pressure. Their commanding partnership ensured the chase was straightforward. Eventually, skipper Charith Asalanka’s side crossed the target in 14.4 overs, sealing a comprehensive win by six wickets though they had lost a few quick wickets towards the end .
The result leaves Bangladesh in a precarious position in the group stage, with their Super Four qualification hopes hanging by a thread, while Sri Lanka look firmly on course for the next round.
