Bangladesh Edge Sri Lanka in a Nail-Biting ‘Nagin Derby’ in Asia Cup 2025

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka locked horns twice in this year’s Asia Cup. Sri Lanka triumphed in the first encounter, but in the much-anticipated rematch, Bangladesh struck back with sweet revenge. In a gripping contest dubbed the ‘Nagin Derby,’ the Tigers chased down 169 with six wickets in hand, though not without late drama that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Batting first, Sri Lanka got off to a steady start through openers Pathum Nissanka (22) and Kusal Mendis (34). While Mendis looked in good touch, his stay was cut short, and Kamil Mishara (5) also departed cheaply. The innings gained momentum thanks to Shanaka, who played a sparkling knock of 64 off 37 balls, laced with crisp boundaries and powerful strokes. Contributions from Charith Asalanka (21) helped push Sri Lanka’s total to a competitive 168/7. However, crucial strikes by Bangladeshi bowlers in the 19th over, when they picked up three wickets, ensured the Lankans couldn’t build an even bigger score. Mustafizur took 3 wickets.

In reply, Bangladesh suffered an early blow when opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim fell for just 2 runs. But Saif Hasan anchored the innings with a composed 61, while skipper Litton Das chipped in with 23 before being caught. The real turning point came with Towhid Hridoy’s elegant 58, which, in partnership with Saif, put Bangladesh firmly in control. Their fluent stroke-play and calm temperament made the chase look effortless at one stage.

Yet, just when victory seemed assured, the game took a twist. Saif departed in the 14th over, followed by Hridoy in the 18th, handing Sri Lanka a glimmer of hope. The tension escalated further in the final over, when Bangladesh, needing just 5 runs, lost two quick wickets. With nerves fraying, it came down to the very last ball—Nasum Ahmed scampered through for the winning run, sealing a dramatic triumph for Bangladesh.

In the end, Bangladesh clinched a thrilling 6-wicket victory, avenging their earlier defeat and reaffirming their reputation as one of Asia’s most spirited fighters.
