Indian Temples - Jagdish Temple, Udaipur- Highlights

Jagdish Temple, Udaipur

Introduction

Located in the very heart of Udaipur, just outside the City Palace, the Jagdish Temple is a major Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu—worshipped here as Jagannath or Jagdish. It’s a prominent cultural and spiritual landmark and has been in continuous worship since 1651.

History in Detail

Commissioned by Maharana Jagat Singh I (reign: 1628–1653), the temple was constructed over more than a decade and reportedly cost a staggering ₹1.5 million—a huge sum at the time. It was inspired by a divine dream in which Lord Jagannath asked the Maharana to build a temple in Udaipur.
In 1680, the temple was partially attacked by Aurangzeb’s forces. Fortunately, it was later restored by Maharana Sangram Singh II around 1723.

Significance

Beyond its spiritual essence, Jagdish Temple was a testament to royal devotion and architectural ambition. Serving as both a place of worship and a cultural focal point, it reflects the legacy of the Mewar dynasty in culture, faith, and art.
