India surprised by fighting Oman win by 21 runs to end as group toppers in Asia Cup

The result was never really in doubt, but Oman’s spirited fight deserved every bit of respect. Ranked 20th in the ICC T20I standings, they were up against the world’s No. 1 side, yet they showed immense character and nearly pushed India to the edge. Chasing 189, Oman eventually finished at 167, going down by just 21 runs as India used their experience to seal the win.

Winning the toss, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav opted to bat. Contributions came from all around: Sanju Samson held the innings together with a composed 56, Abhishek Sharma unleashed a whirlwind 38 off just 15 balls, Axar Patel added 26, and Tilak Varma struck a handy 29 late on, taking India to 188. In reply, Oman’s openers Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem gave them a strong start. Kuldeep Yadav provided India with their first breakthrough, bowling Jatinder for 32. From there, Kaleem and Hammad Mirza took charge, counterattacking with such intent that India’s bowling looked toothless.

Notably, India had rested Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy, with Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana filling in, but both had an ordinary day. At one stage, with Oman 131/1 after 16 overs, an upset seemed on the cards. In desperation, Suryakumar had already rotated through eight bowlers — something India has done only five times in T20Is. Oman’s resilience turned the contest into a real thriller.

With 48 needed from the last three overs, the turning point came in Harshit Rana’s third over. After being hit for consecutive boundaries, he found salvation when Hardik Pandya pulled off a stunning boundary catch to dismiss Kaleem for 64. The moment immediately evoked memories of Suryakumar’s iconic grab in the T20 World Cup final. From there, Oman’s resistance faded.

Arshdeep Singh sealed the game by removing Binayak Shukla in the final over — his 100th T20I wicket, making him the first Indian to reach the landmark. He achieved the feat in just 64 matches, ahead of Hardik Pandya (96) and Bumrah (92). Oman’s innings closed at 167, handing India a 21-run victory. Sanju Samson’s 56 earned him the Player of the Match award.

India now gear up for a high-voltage clash against Pakistan in the Super Four on Sunday.
