Introduction

Eklingji Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located in Kailashpuri, about 22 km north of Udaipur in Rajasthan. Dedicated to Lord Shiva—worshipped as Eklingji—the temple serves as the divine patron of the historic Mewar kingdom. Traditionally, the reigning Maharana of Mewar was considered just the Diwan (minister), while Eklingji was the true sovereign—imbuing the temple with deep spiritual and historical significance.

History in Detail

Constructed in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, founder of the Mewar dynasty, the original temple was later destroyed by invasions from the Delhi Sultanate. Significant renovations were undertaken by Hamir Singh (14th century), followed by major reconstruction by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century. Later, Rana Raimal, in the late 15th century, restored the temple and installed the current four-faced Shiva idol.

Significance

  • Spiritual and Royal Symbol: Eklingji is deeply woven into Mewar’s identity. The temple served as the spiritual backbone of the royal lineage—the Maharana being the earthly administrator to Shiva, the kingdom’s true ruler.
  • Center of Pilgrimage: Especially vibrant on Shivratri, Mondays, and during Shravan month, the temple is a pilgrimage hub that reinforces regional faith and tradition.

Architecture & Temple Details

  • The temple is situated over 2.5 acres, set amidst hills and a stream. Built in classic Nagara architectural style, its most striking feature is the 50-foot granite shikhara (tower) with a pyramidal top.
  • The main sanctuary houses a rare four-faced black marble Shiva linga, with each face representing a different deity:
    • East – Surya
    • West – Brahma
    • North – Vishnu
    • South – Rudra (Shiva)
  • Around it stand smaller shrines dedicated to Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya, as well as images of Nandi and Bappa Rawal. The complex also boasts a silver Nandi, carved doors, a 7-meter elephant-carved entrance gate, and a stone courtyard for festivals.

    • Morning: 4:00 AM – 6:30 AM; 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM
    • Evening: 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Aarti Schedule: Includes early morning, midday, and evening rituals—precise timings may vary slightly.
  • Entry Fee: There is no entry fee—visitation is open to all.

  • By Rail: Udaipur Railway Station lies about 22–25 km from the temple, well-connected to major Indian cities.
  • By Road: Situated on NH-8, Eklingji Temple can be reached via taxis, buses, or autos from Udaipur in 35–45 minutes.
