Batters , Archer run riot as England demolish Proteas in 3rd ODI after losing series
England produced a record-breaking performance in Southampton on Sunday, thrashing South Africa by a massive 342 runs in the third and final One-Day International. Despite the tourists having already sealed the series with two wins, England’s commanding display ensured they ended on a high with the largest margin of victory ever recorded in ODI cricket.
After being asked to bat first, England piled on the runs to finish at 414 for five in 50 overs. The innings was headlined by a maiden professional century from Jacob Bethell, who smashed 110 off 82 balls, and a typically composed 100 from Joe Root off 96 deliveries. Their 182-run partnership for the third wicket dismantled South Africa’s attack, with Bethell in particular cutting loose before being stumped off Keshav Maharaj. Earlier, opener Jamie Smith had given the innings momentum with a lively 62 from 48 balls, while captain Jos Buttler provided the late fireworks, striking an unbeaten 62 off just 32 deliveries.
South Africa’s reply was in complete contrast. The visitors crumbled under the pace of Jofra Archer, who delivered a blistering spell to take 4 for 18. At one stage, South Africa were reeling at 7 for 4, and though they managed to avoid their lowest ODI score, they were eventually bowled out for just 72. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid also contributed with excellent figures of 3 for 13, as England’s bowlers ruthlessly closed out the game. Captain Temba Bavuma could not bat due to a calf injury, compounding South Africa’s woes.
The result shattered the previous record margin of victory—India’s 317-run win against Sri Lanka in 2023—and gave England a morale-boosting triumph ahead of the upcoming three-match T20I series beginning in Cardiff on Wednesday.
