India demolish UAE in a rollicking start to their Asia Cup campaign

India toyed with the UAE, cruising to a nine-wicket win with nearly 16 overs to spare in their 1st match of Asia Cup 2025.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav, winning the toss after 15 matches, chose to bowl first and didn’t experiment much. Had he opted to bat, perhaps the match would have lasted a bit longer. But the Indian bowlers ensured the contest was one-sided from the very beginning.

The UAE didn’t start too badly. Opener Alishan Sharafu took advantage of the powerplay with some big hits, supported by captain Mohammed Wasim. Interestingly, Jasprit Bumrah conceded the most runs among the Indian bowlers, though it was he who struck the first blow with an unplayable yorker to dismiss Sharafu.

Suryakumar introduced spin as early as the third over, and once both ends were operated by spinners, the UAE batters had no answers. Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy spun a web, leaving Rahul Chopra and Asif Khan completely clueless. They struggled to pick the leg-spin, wrong’uns, and variations, swinging blindly and paying the price.

At 47 for 2 after eight overs, UAE still looked steady, but in the next 5.1 overs they collapsed spectacularly, losing eight wickets for just 10 runs. Kuldeep claimed four wickets, Shivam Dube picked up three, while Varun and the others stifled the scoring. Remarkably, all three bowlers conceded single-digit runs—Varun gave 4 runs in 2 overs, Kuldeep 7 in 2.1, and Dube just 4 in 2 overs. UAE were bundled out for their lowest T20I total against India.

Chasing 59 was never going to be a challenge for the in-form Indian batting lineup. The only question was whether they could finish it within the powerplay. Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill (20*)  batted as if they had come straight from the nets, with Abhishek smashing a six off the very first ball. He departed for 30 trying another big hit, but India still wrapped up the chase inside the powerplay, taking just 27 balls to finish the game.

Up next is the big one—India vs Pakistan on Sunday. With the match scheduled at the same venue, and India in such red-hot form with both bat and ball, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha already has reasons to worry.
