US Open 2025: Djokovic Battles Through, Sabalenka Cruises, Tiafoe Falls
The 2025 US Open reached an electrifying stage over Days 5 and 6 at Flushing Meadows, with Novak Djokovic proving his mettle once again, Aryna Sabalenka continuing her dominant run, and Frances Tiafoe suffering a disappointing early exit.
Djokovic Overcomes Back Issue to Advance
Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, showed why he remains a force at 38, defeating Cameron Norrie 6–4, 6–7(4), 6–2, 6–3 in a testing third-round match. The Serbian champion battled a lingering lower back problem but raised his level at key moments, sealing victory in just over three hours. After winning the 1st set Djokovic had a hiccup in set 2 losing in the tie breaker and then getting broken early in set 3 but soon raised his game afterwards to breeze through sets 3 & 4 with immaculate tennis . With this win, Djokovic became the oldest man since Jimmy Connors in 1991 to reach the fourth round at the US Open and also set a new record with his 192nd hard-court Grand Slam victory, surpassing Roger Federer’s tally. He now faces German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 16.
Sabalenka Maintains Her Title Charge
On the women’s side, second seed Aryna Sabalenka looked in control as she stormed past Polina Kudermetova 7–6(4), 6–2 in her second-round match on Day 5. After a slightly tense first set, Sabalenka’s aggressive baseline play and superior serving proved decisive, as she secured a straight-sets win in just under 90 minutes. The Belarusian, who is chasing her third Grand Slam title, will face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez next in what promises to be a thrilling clash of power and athleticism.
Tiafoe Upset by Struff
American favorite Frances Tiafoe’s campaign came to an abrupt end as he was stunned by Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets: 6–4, 6–3, 7–6(9). Struff, coming through the qualifiers, used his big serve and aggressive net play to overwhelm Tiafoe in front of a partisan home crowd. The loss marks another setback for Tiafoe, who had been tipped as a potential contender after his semifinal run in 2022. Struff’s inspired run continues, and he will now meet Djokovic in one of the most anticipated fourth-round encounters.
With Djokovic digging deep to stay in the hunt, Sabalenka showcasing her dominance, and Struff’s giant-killing form grabbing headlines, the US Open is living up to its reputation for drama and unpredictability. As the tournament heads into its second week, fans can expect even more high-stakes tennis and potential upsets under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
