ISRO Satellite Images Reveal Massive Destruction in Uttarkashi post Flash Floods
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released striking before-and-after satellite images capturing the devastation caused by flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district during the first week of August. The images focus on Dharali village, the epicentre of the disaster, which has been almost entirely wiped out.
A satellite image from June last year shows the Bhagirathi River flowing past a small patch of land dotted with houses, orchards, and small buildings. In stark contrast, a second image dated August 7 shows the area completely submerged, the landmass erased, and all structures swept away.
The inner sections of Dharali, where the Kheer Gad River meets the Bhagirathi, have also been obliterated. Roads, along with a small bridge over the Kheer Gad, have disappeared, and the Bhagirathi’s curve now resembles a vast crater due to massive sediment and debris deposits—covering an estimated 20 hectares.
District officials told ANI on Monday that nearly 1,300 people had been rescued or evacuated since the tragedy struck. Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Pandey confirmed that rescue operations have concluded and most road connectivity has been restored. “The Valley Bridge is operational, and full connectivity should be restored by evening. Essential supplies, including food and warm clothing, are being distributed, and aid announced by the state will follow,” he said.
However, 43 people—including nine Army personnel—remain missing. The number of missing Nepali workers has dropped from 29 to 24 as verification efforts continue. At least five fatalities have been confirmed.
ISRO’s satellite data has been instrumental in assessing the scale of the destruction, mapping flooded areas, and guiding search-and-rescue teams to priority locations.
Fresh rainfall early Monday posed a renewed threat to operations in Dharali, with the weather department issuing a ‘yellow’ alert for all districts and a ‘red’ alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Almora, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Pauri, and Udham Singh Nagar. Heavy rain was also reported in Dehradun and the already-ravaged Uttarkashi district.
