Maxwell pilots Aussies to series winning epic victory in 3rd T20I vs South Africa

Australia clinched a thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in the third and final T20I at Cazaly’s Stadium on Saturday, sealing the series 2–1. The win was headlined by captain Mitchell Marsh’s fluent fifty and Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten match-winning masterclass.

Chasing 174, the hosts looked in deep trouble at 122/6 before Maxwell stepped up with a brilliant 62* off 36 balls. The right-hander displayed his trademark flair, clearing the ropes with ease and keeping Australia in the contest despite losing partners at the other end.

The game swung dramatically in the penultimate over when Corbin Bosch bowled a double-wicket maiden, leaving Maxwell stranded at the non-striker’s end and Australia still needing 10 runs off the final six deliveries. Unfazed, Maxwell steered his side home with nerveless finishing — running a desperate two, carving a boundary, surviving two dot balls, and then producing a stunning reverse scoop over short third to seal the win with just two balls to spare. His heroics rightly earned him the Player of the Match award.

Earlier in the chase, Marsh had set the platform with a brisk 54 from 37 deliveries, striking three fours and six sixes. However, regular wickets saw Australia wobble until Maxwell took charge. Tim David, who contributed consistently across the series with 150 runs, was named Player of the Series.

For South Africa, Bosch impressed with figures of 3/26 from four overs, including a maiden. Kagiso Rabada (2/32) and teenager Kwena Maphaka (2/36) also chipped in, while skipper Aiden Markram bowled two tidy overs for 1/6.

Earlier in the day, after opting to field, Australia made early inroads. Markram departed for just 1 in the opening over, followed by Lhuan-dre Pretorius (24) and Ryan Rickelton (13), leaving the Proteas struggling at 49/3 in the seventh over.

Dewald Brevis injected momentum with a blistering 50 off only 22 balls, smashing six sixes and a solitary four, before falling to Nathan Ellis for 53 . His 61-run stand with Tristan Stubbs (25) gave South Africa a much-needed lift. But regular breakthroughs from Ellis, Zampa, and Hazlewood pegged them back again.

Rassie van der Dussen’s steady unbeaten 38 ensured the Proteas reached a competitive 172/7. Ellis was the most effective bowler for Australia with 3/31, while Zampa (2/24) and Hazlewood (2/30) kept things tight in the middle and death overs.

In the end, Maxwell’s brilliance turned the tide as Australia completed a hard-fought win to wrap up the series in style.
