Tim David’s Six-Hitting Blitz Fires Australia to 17-Run Win Over South Africa in Darwin

Tim David unleashed a ferocious display of power-hitting, smashing eight sixes in a blazing 83 off 52 balls to propel Australia to a 17-run victory over South Africa in the opening T20 clash in Darwin — the first international cricket match in Australia’s tropical north in 17 years.

Sent in to bat, Australia were dismissed for 178 on the final ball of their innings — their first-ever all-out in T20Is against South Africa. Left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka starred with the ball, taking 4-20, while Cameron Green (35 off 13) was the only other Australian batter to find rhythm early.

David’s innings proved the turning point. Coming in with Australia reeling at 75-6, he combined with Ben Dwarshuis (17) for a crucial 59-run stand for the seventh wicket. A dropped catch by Tristan Stubbs on 56 gave him a reprieve before Stubbs finally held one to end David’s assault.

Australia’s innings began with Mitch Marsh hammering a six off the first ball, but early wickets saw Travis Head (2), Josh Inglis (0) and Marsh (13) depart quickly. Green provided a brief counterattack before falling to Lungi Ngidi, and both Mitch Owen (2) and Glenn Maxwell (1) failed to fire.

South Africa’s chase faltered early when captain Aiden Markram was removed by Josh Hazlewood in the first over. By the powerplay, they were 48-3. Ryan Rickelton’s fighting 71 and Stubbs’ 37 kept them in the hunt with a 72-run stand, but Hazlewood (3-27) broke the partnership with two wickets in one over. Adam Zampa then dealt a double blow in the next, and Ben Dwarshuis (3-26) ensured Australia closed out the win, restricting the Proteas to 161-9.

Australia, fresh from a 5-0 sweep of the West Indies, now take a 1-0 lead in the series.
