Indian Temples: Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Khajuraho- Highlights

Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Khajuraho

Introduction

The Kandariya Mahadev Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the finest and largest temples of the Chandela dynasty, renowned for its architectural brilliance and intricate carvings. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms part of the Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho. Built primarily in the Nagara style, the temple is celebrated as an artistic masterpiece of medieval Indian architecture.

History in Detail

The temple was built around 1025–1050 CE by King Vidydhara of the Chandela dynasty. The Chandelas were known for their patronage of art, architecture, and culture. The temple’s name "Kandariya" means "cave-like," referring to its mountain-inspired design symbolizing Mount Meru, the mythical home of gods in Hindu cosmology.

During this era, Khajuraho flourished as a cultural and religious hub. The temple’s erotic sculptures, alongside depictions of daily life, spiritual themes, and deities, reflect a society that embraced the Tantric philosophy — where the path to moksha (liberation) could involve all aspects of life, including physical love.

Despite centuries of political change, the temple remained remarkably intact, thanks to its solid sandstone construction and relative isolation until rediscovery in the 19th century by British surveyor T.S. Burt.
