Introduction

Shri Siddhivinayak Temple, situated in the Prabhadevi area of Mumbai, is one of India’s most renowned temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Known as Siddhivinayak, meaning “Ganesha who grants wishes and success,” the temple attracts millions of devotees from across the country, making it a spiritual landmark of Mumbai.

History

The temple was originally built on 19 November 1801 by Laxman Vithu Patil and his wife Deubai Patil, who was childless and wished to create a temple where other women seeking blessings for children could pray. The original structure was a modest shrine, measuring just 3.6 by 3.6 metres, with a simple dome.

Over the centuries, the temple evolved into a sprawling complex to accommodate its growing popularity. A major renovation in the 1990s transformed it into a grand multi-storeyed structure, while preserving its spiritual essence and historical roots.

Significance

The presiding deity is a striking black stone idol of Lord Ganesha, notable for its tilted right trunk and a third eye on the forehead. Ganesha is depicted with four arms holding a lotus, axe, prayer beads, and a bowl of Modaks—his favourite sweet. The idol is flanked by goddesses Riddhi and Siddhi, representing wealth and spiritual power.

Intricate wooden doors at the entrance feature carvings of the Ashtavinayak, the eight revered forms of Ganesha worshipped in Maharashtra. The temple is considered one of the wealthiest in India and draws huge crowds, especially on Tuesdays and during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Temple Architecture and Features

The Siddhivinayak Temple is a six-storey structure crowned with a gold-plated dome. Each floor serves a distinct function:

  • Ground Floor: The main sanctum and darshan area.
  • Second Floor: Administrative offices and kitchen facilities, with elevator access to the sanctum.
  • Third Floor: Offices and conference rooms.
  • Fourth Floor: A public library and study hall containing more than 8,000 books.
  • Fifth Floor: A large kitchen used for preparing offerings and festival meals.
  • Sixth Floor: The gold-plated dome and crown, symbolizing divine energy.

The premises also include a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman, where an idol was unearthed during roadwork in the mid-20th century.

Timings and Rituals

The temple is generally open daily from 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM. Key rituals include:

  • Kakad Aarti in the early morning
  • Naivedhya offering at midday
  • Evening Aarti after sunset
  • Shejaarti at night before closing

On Tuesdays, the temple opens earlier, around 3:15 AM, and remains open until midnight to accommodate large crowds.

  • Air: The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, approximately 12 kilometres away.
  • Rail: Dadar Station on the Western and Central railway lines is the closest major railhead.
  • Road: The temple is easily accessible by local buses, taxis, and private vehicles. The vibrant flower market leading up to the temple adds to the spiritual atmosphere.
