Lakshmana Temple, Khajuraho

Introduction

The Lakshmana Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most prominent and well-preserved temples of the Western Group of Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Vaikuntha form, the temple is an architectural marvel of the Chandela dynasty. Its exquisite carvings, intricate sculptures, and balanced proportions make it a true gem of Indian temple art.

History in Detail

The Lakshmana Temple was built around 930–950 CE by Yashovarman, a powerful ruler of the Chandela dynasty, who reigned during the early medieval period. Yashovarman constructed this temple to mark his political power and religious devotion, establishing Khajuraho as an important center of art, spirituality, and culture.

The temple is among the earliest and most significant temples of Khajuraho, setting the tone for the architectural grandeur of the other temples in the complex. It was commissioned as a dedication to Vaikuntha Vishnu, a rare aspect of Vishnu depicted with three heads – human, lion, and boar – symbolizing his universal cosmic presence.

The temple also stands as a symbol of the Chandela dynasty’s prosperity, devotion, and patronage of temple architecture and sculpture.
