Brevis blitzkrieg sinks Aussies as South Africa square T20I series
South Africa roared back into the three-match T20I series with a commanding performance, as player of the match Dewald Brevis produced a breathtaking unbeaten 125 off 56 deliveries to seal a 53-run win over Australia in the second clash at Darwin’s Marrara Stadium on Tuesday.
Brevis’ masterclass — the highest individual score by a South African in T20I history — lifted the visitors to an imposing 218 for seven, despite an early slump to 57 for three within the opening seven overs. The 22-year-old’s maiden T20I hundred came in just 41 balls and featured 12 fours and eight sixes, turning the innings into a statement of dominance.
Australia’s chase of 219 never gathered momentum, and they were dismissed for 165 in 17.4 overs, bringing an end to their nine-match winning run in the format.
Asked to bat first, South Africa started positively but stumbled when captain Aiden Markram (18) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (10) fell in quick succession to part-time spinner Glenn Maxwell, who shared the new ball with Josh Hazlewood. Maxwell struck twice — Markram caught at mid-off and Pretorius stumped — leaving the visitors under pressure.
Brevis, however, found an able partner in Tristan Stubbs (31), and together they launched a counteroffensive that wrested control from the hosts. Boundaries & sixes flowed from Brevis' bat as the tourists looked poised for a 220 plus score .
Australia’s reply suffered an early setback when Travis Head fell to Markram’s spin in the second over. Young left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka (3/57) conceded five boundaries in his opening over but hit back strongly, claiming the wickets of Cameron Green, Maxwell, and Mitchell Owen...all cheaply
Tim David fought valiantly with a brisk 50 off 23 balls — his second of the series — but with wickets tumbling regularly, the target proved out of reach. Markram's masterstroke of bringing in Rabada early for his 3rd over to break the partnership proved to be a massively brave move as Rabada dismissed the dangerous looking David to rock the Aussies & script the turning point of the match . The hosts fell apart after David's exit .
The series will now be decided in Cairns on Saturday, with both sides level at 1-1.
