Introduction

The Chaturbhuj Temple in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most magnificent examples of Bundela-era temple architecture. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple’s name “Chaturbhuj” literally means one with four arms, a reference to Lord Vishnu. Known for its massive scale, unique blend of temple and fort-like architectural style, and its elevated location, the temple dominates the Orchha skyline.

History in Detail

The temple was commissioned in the 16th century by Raja Madhukar Shah, a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, during the Bundela dynasty’s rule. According to legend, Queen Ganesh Kunwari (Rani Ganesh Kunwari), a great devotee of Lord Rama, wished to install an idol of Rama in this temple. She brought an idol of Lord Rama from Ayodhya after deep penance and devotion. However, as per the legend, the idol miraculously refused to move from the palace where it was first placed. As a result, Lord Rama was enshrined in the nearby Raja Ram Temple, while the Chaturbhuj Temple remained dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

The temple’s construction reflects the grandeur of Bundela rulers, showcasing a remarkable mixture of temple spires and palace-like structures. It also demonstrates the political and religious ambitions of the Bundela dynasty, who wanted Orchha to be a great spiritual and cultural hub.
