South Africa Clinch WTC Title, End 27-Year Wait for ICC Trophy. Markram player of the match.

South Africa defeated defending champions Australia by five wickets on the fourth day of the final on Saturday, successfully chasing down the remaining 69 runs to win the World Test Championship (WTC) title. This historic victory marked South Africa’s first major cricket title in 27 years, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans at Lord’s. The last time South Africa had won an ICC trophy was in 1998, when they lifted the Champions Trophy.

The Proteas began the day at 213 for 2 and went on to reach the target by scoring 282 for 5. This chase is now the second-highest successful run chase in the 141-year history of Test matches at Lord’s. Australia, under the leadership of Pat Cummins, fought hard on the fourth morning, testing South Africa's batters with disciplined bowling.

A moment of concern came early in the day when skipper Temba Bavuma (66) edged a delivery from Cummins to wicketkeeper Alex Carey in just the third over, evoking fears of another heartbreak for South Africa. Stubbs & Markram had a 24 run stand before Starc bowled Stubbs(8) with Australia still needing  41 more runs with 6 wickets remaining.  Tensions continued amongst the South African fans .

However, opener Aiden Markram, who had started the day on 102*, remained resolute. Displaying remarkable composure, Markram guided the team away from danger and ultimately helped them shake off the "chokers" tag that has haunted South African cricket for decades.

Interestingly, Markram had scored a duck in the first innings, but made a sensational comeback in the second. Opening the innings, he played with patience and maturity to notch a match-winning century. He was finally dismissed for 136 by Josh Hazlewood on the fourth day, but by then, South Africa was well on its way to victory. His 207-ball innings included 14 boundaries and was instrumental in taking the game beyond Australia’s reach. For his brilliant knock under pressure, Aiden Markram was deservedly named Player of the Match.
