Australia beat West Indies by 159 runs in a hard fought 1st test - Head , Hazlewood shines

Australia Begin WTC 2025–27 with Dominant Win Over West Indies

Australia have kicked off their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 campaign with a convincing victory, thrashing West Indies by 159 runs in the first Test at Bridgetown, Barbados on a spicy pitch helping the seamers . The star of the match was Australian batter Travis Head, who struck impressive half-centuries in both innings, playing a key role in snatching the win from the hosts. Head scored a total of 120 runs in the match, helping Australia take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

Despite a brilliant bowling performance from West Indies’ young pacer Shamar Joseph, who claimed 9 wickets in the match, the hosts couldn’t avoid defeat. The second Test will be played in St. George’s from July 3.

Travis Head: Australia’s Crisis Man Once Again

Travis Head once again stepped up when his team needed him the most. He scored 59 runs in the first innings coming to bat at 22/3 and followed it up with a 61-run knock in the second coming to bat at 57/3 , ensuring Australia posted competitive totals in both innings.

Head's efforts were complemented by solid performances from wicketkeeper Alex Carey (65 runs) and all-rounder Beau Webster (63 runs) in the second innings, which helped Australia post 310 runs, setting a formidable target for the West Indies.

West Indies Batting Falters Again

After bowling out Australia for just 180 runs in the first innings with Seales taking 5 wickets & Shamar Joseph grabbing 4 wickets , West Indies failed to capitalize and managed only 190 runs in reply with 48 from Hope & 44 from captain Roston Chase , squandering the chance to take a significant lead. Australia also had a shaky start in their second innings, losing 4 wickets for just 65 runs, but the middle-order trio of Head, Carey, and Webster turned the tide.

Australia set West Indies a target of 301 runs, but the Caribbean side collapsed under pressure, getting bowled out for just 141 runs. Shamar Joseph was the top scorer in the second innings with a quickfire 44 runs, including 4 sixes and 4 fours in just 22 balls.

Hazlewood and Lyon Lead Aussie Bowling Charge

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood led the bowling attack in the second innings, taking five wickets, while Nathan Lyon chipped in with two wickets. The bowlers ensured West Indies never got into a rhythm, wrapping up the win comfortably.

Shamar Joseph Shines Despite Loss

Despite his team’s defeat, Shamar Joseph emerged as a standout performer. He took 4 wickets in the first innings and added 5 more in the second, showcasing his skill and determination. He also contributed with the bat, playing a blistering cameo in the second innings. However, his all-round brilliance wasn’t enough to prevent West Indies from falling short.

With this emphatic win, Australia have secured their first points in the WTC 2025–27 cycle, sending a strong message to other contenders early in the competition. However they seem to have major issues in their batting with their top 3 falling in a heap in both innings ( shades of WTC final ) & the absence of Smith & Labuschagne felt greatly . Strong batting from Head , Webster & Carey saw them through in a test dominating by fast bowlers.
