KL , Pant 100s help India set 371 target to England in 1st test

The fourth day of the first Test match between India and England at Headingley, Leeds, delivered high drama and intense action. The Indian team started the day strongly with impressive batting performances from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, both of whom scored centuries to put India in a commanding position. However, a post-tea collapse saw the Indian innings unravel quickly, giving England an opportunity to turn the match in their favor. By stumps, England had started their chase without losing a wicket, setting the stage for a gripping final day.

India resumed their second innings on Day 4 at 90/2, with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease . However England had early success with Gill (8) getting dismissed by Carse getting played on.  Rishabh Pant arrived  at the crease and looked in control digging in with Rahul to forge a long partnership like they did at the Oval in 2018 . The duo batted superbly, stitching together a crucial 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Rahul who showed great technical finesse, playing with soft hands & leaving well,  scored a patient 137 off 247 balls, hitting 13 exquisite boundaries, while Pant played a counter-attacking knock of 118, which included 15 fours and three sixes in his typical aggressive style taking the fight to the hosts . Pant went on an all out offensive after reaching his 2nd 100 of the test & finally was dismissed for 118

However, the momentum shifted dramatically after the tea break. Rahul was bowled by Brydon Carse in the 84.2nd over, triggering a collapse. Karun Nair (20) fell after looking well settled  India lost their remaining wickets in a heap  for just 31 more runs and were bowled out soon after with Jadeja remaining 25 notout .

For England, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue took three wickets each, while Shoaib Bashir picked up two. Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes chipped in with one wicket apiece. India held a slender 6-run lead from the first innings, which meant England were set a target of 371 runs to win.

England began their chase confidently and ended the day at 21/0, without losing a wicket. Ben Duckett remained unbeaten on 9, while Zak Crawley was on 12. The English openers batted with great caution, ensuring India’s pace duo Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj remained wicketless.

With 350 runs still required for England and 10 wickets in hand, while India needs to take all 10 wickets to win, the final day promises to be a thrilling decider.
