Starc’s Stunning 10-Wicket Match Haul Powers Australia to Emphatic Innings Victory Over Bangladesh in 2nd test, Series 1-1
Australia produced a magnificent and ruthless response to their defeat in the opening Test, crushing Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs on the second day of the second Test at Mackay to level the two-match series 1-1. In a match dominated by hostile fast bowling and dramatic collapses, the contest was completed in just two days, with Mitchell Starc delivering a sensational all-round bowling performance to spearhead Australia's commanding victory.
The second day began with Australia resuming their first innings at 165/8, already holding a lead of 101 runs after Bangladesh had been bowled out for a dismal 64 on the opening day. Cameron Green, unbeaten overnight on 51, continued to provide resistance in a fragile Australian innings. However, Bangladesh's left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam remained a constant threat and completed a memorable spell, helping dismiss Australia for 210. Green finished as Australia's top scorer with a valuable 67, while Shoriful returned extraordinary figures of 7/48, his best performance in Test cricket and the best innings figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia.
Despite Shoriful's heroic effort, Bangladesh faced a daunting task when they began their second innings trailing by 146 runs. Their hopes of producing a stronger batting performance were quickly shattered by Australia's fearsome pace attack. Starc once again struck early, generating pace, movement and steep bounce to put Bangladesh under immediate pressure. Pat Cummins provided excellent support, and the visitors once again found themselves struggling to build meaningful partnerships.
At lunch, Bangladesh were 39/3, still trailing Australia by 107 runs. The morning session had made it clear that Australia were firmly in control, although Bangladesh still had enough wickets remaining to attempt a recovery. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto offered some resistance and eventually top-scored with 31, but the Australian bowlers gave the Bangladesh batters virtually no opportunity to settle.
The collapse continued after lunch as Bangladesh's batting order once again succumbed to the relentless Australian attack. The visitors were eventually bowled out for just 95 in 38.3 overs, meaning that both their innings in the Test finished below 100. Starc was outstanding, taking 4/39, while Cummins produced an incisive spell of 3/10. Veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon then wrapped up the innings with 3/25, including the final two wickets shortly after the tea interval.
Starc's contribution across the match was simply exceptional. After his devastating 6/12 in Bangladesh's first innings, he added another four wickets in the second to finish with remarkable match figures of 10/51. His pace, accuracy and ability to exploit the lively Mackay surface repeatedly exposed Bangladesh's technical weaknesses. The performance earned Starc both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards. Across the two-Test series, he finished with 12 wickets at an average of 12.08, underlining his enormous influence on Australia's comeback.
The match also highlighted the contrasting fortunes of the two teams. Bangladesh had entered the contest full of confidence after their historic nine-wicket victory in the first Test at Darwin, but their batting collapsed dramatically in Mackay for scores of 64 and 95. Shoriful's magnificent 7/48 gave Bangladesh a genuine opportunity to fight back, but the visitors' inability to handle Australia's pace attack proved fatal.
Australia, meanwhile, showed admirable resilience after the humiliation of the first Test. Although their batting remained inconsistent, Green's fighting 67 and Shoriful's seven-wicket haul ensured that the second day began with plenty of interest. But once Starc and Cummins unleashed their devastating pace, the contest rapidly became one-sided.
The innings-and-51-run victory was therefore a powerful statement from Australia. From being comprehensively beaten in Darwin, Pat Cummins' side responded with a clinical and emphatic performance to square the series 1-1. Starc's spectacular 10-wicket match haul was the defining feature of a remarkable two-day Test, while Shoriful's record-breaking seven-wicket effort remained a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing day for Bangladesh.
