Day 5 of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 - India beat Pakistan 5-3 , Big win for England

The fifth day of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 produced some outstanding performances, high-scoring contests and dramatic finishes in both the men's and women's competitions. Eight matches were played on 19 August, with India’s 5–3 victory over Pakistan providing the biggest talking point of the day. The tournament is being jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from 15 to 30 August.

Men's Matches

India 5–3 Pakistan — Pool D

The most anticipated match of the day saw India defeat arch-rivals Pakistan 5–3 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen. Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, while Abhishek also contributed two goals and Hardik Singh added another. Pakistan fought back through Sufyan Khan and Hannan Shahid, but India maintained control to secure a place in the second stage.

The victory gave India six points and second place in Pool D, behind England. Pakistan's defeat ended its campaign in the tournament.

England 8–2 Wales — Pool D

England produced the biggest score of the men's tournament so far, defeating Wales 8–2. Sam Ward opened the scoring early, while Will Calnan scored twice. Tom Sorsby, Zach Wallace and other English attackers added further goals as England dominated the contest.

Wales scored twice late in the match through Gareth Furlong, but England comfortably secured top spot in Pool D with a perfect three wins from three matches.

France 1–1 Germany — Pool B

Defending champions Germany appeared to be heading for victory after Justus Weigand put them ahead in the third quarter. France, however, produced a dramatic late equaliser through Louis Haertelmeyer with only 39 seconds remaining.

The 1–1 draw allowed Germany to retain its position at the top of Pool B, while France earned an important point.

Belgium 5–3 Malaysia — Pool B

Hosts Belgium overcame a determined Malaysia 5–3 in Wavre. Tom Boon was the star of the contest, scoring four goals, while Thibeau Stockbroekx added the other Belgian goal.

Malaysia stayed competitive throughout the match and even had an opportunity from a late penalty stroke, but Belgium held on. The victory confirmed Belgium's second-place finish in Pool B behind Germany.

Women's Matches

Netherlands 9–0 Japan — Pool A

The Netherlands women produced the day's most emphatic result, crushing Japan 9–0. Yibbi Jansen scored four goals, while Marijn Veen and Felice Albers added two each.

The defending champions finished the pool stage unbeaten and secured top spot in Pool A. Australia also progressed from the pool after its earlier draw with Chile.

Chile 4–4 Australia — Pool A

Australia and Chile played one of the most exciting matches of the day. The lead changed hands several times before Mariah Williams scored with only 31 seconds remaining to rescue a 4–4 draw for Australia.

The result was enough for Australia to advance to the next stage in second place in Pool A.

Argentina 2–0 Scotland — Pool B

Argentina defeated Scotland 2–0 to finish strongly in Pool B. María Granatto opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 11th minute, while Lara Casas added the second goal in the third quarter.

The victory helped Argentina secure top position in Pool B, with Germany finishing second.

USA 1–3 Germany — Pool B

Germany secured second place in Pool B with a 3–1 victory over the United States. Jette Fleschütz scored twice, including two successful penalty strokes, while Lisa Nolte also found the net.

Ashley Sessa scored for the USA, but Germany restored its two-goal advantage and collected the points required to move into the next stage.

Overall Assessment

Day 5 was one of the most eventful days of the 2026 Hockey World Cup. India's 5–3 victory over Pakistan was the headline result in the men's competition, while England's 8–2 win over Wales demonstrated its attacking strength. Belgium and Germany also strengthened their positions in Pool B.

In the women's tournament, the Netherlands' 9–0 demolition of Japan and the thrilling 4–4 draw between Chile and Australia were the standout results. Argentina and Germany also secured important victories.

Under the new World Cup format, the top two teams from each pool progress to the Second Stage, while the remaining teams enter the Classification Stage.

Conclusion: Day 5 combined fierce rivalry, attacking hockey and late drama. For Indian fans, the biggest highlight was undoubtedly the men's team's 5–3 victory over Pakistan, which kept India's World Cup title hopes firmly alive.
