India Seize Firm Control as Rain Delays Victory Against Sri Lanka on Day 4

 


India tightened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on a dramatic fourth day, enforcing the follow-on and reducing the hosts to 229/6 at stumps. With Sri Lanka holding only a 16-run lead and four wickets remaining, India are now within touching distance of a series-clinching victory.

The morning session began with India completing the job of dismissing Sri Lanka for 290 in 89.4 overs, giving the visitors a substantial 213-run first-innings lead after India had declared at 503/9. Sri Lanka's resistance was spearheaded by Sonal Dinusha, who scored a determined 103, his second century of the series. However, India's disciplined attack eventually broke through the lower order.

India's bowling effort was led by Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar, who claimed three wickets apiece. Saransh Jain took two, while Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja claimed one each. Sri Lanka's first innings also saw Pasindu Sooriyabandara make 80, but the hosts could not avoid the follow-on.

Captain Shubman Gill wasted little time in enforcing the follow-on, asking Sri Lanka to bat again immediately. The decision put India in a commanding position as Sri again lost Udara early but Kamil Mishara (32) played well at the start  . Sri Lanka responded with admirable defiance. Pasindu Sooriyabandara produced a superb counter-attacking 92, while Kamindu Mendis contributed 55, frustrating India's bowlers for much of the second and third sessions.

India eventually found the breakthrough they desperately needed. Manav Suthar dismissed Sooriyabandara for 92, with Rishabh Pant completing a sharp stumping. Suthar struck again to remove Keshara Nuwantha, while Saransh Jain dismissed Niroshan Dickwella and later claimed another wicket. Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja also contributed to India's growing pressure.


Rain, however, denied India the opportunity to finish the contest on the fourth day. Play was abandoned with Sri Lanka on 229/6 after 72.4 overs, only 16 runs ahead. The interruption has kept alive a faint possibility of a dramatic Sri Lankan escape, but India remain overwhelmingly favoured to complete the job if sufficient play is available on the final day.

With four Sri Lankan wickets still standing, India need just one final push to wrap up the innings and chase what should be a modest target. The fifth day will therefore be a battle against both Sri Lanka's remaining resistance and the unpredictable Colombo weather. India have done almost everything right; now they need to finish the job.
