Day 7 of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, Netherlands women beat India , Germany, Australia get wins
Day 7 of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, played on 21 August, marked the beginning of the second round and classification phase of the men's tournament. The competition became significantly more intense as the eight teams that had progressed from the opening round entered the battle for the semi-finals, while the other eight teams began competing for final positions from ninth to 16th. The second round features two pools of four teams, with the top two from each pool progressing to the semi-finals.
The opening match of the day in the classification phase saw France and South Africa meet in Pool H at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre. France recorded a 3–0 victory, giving them three points and a goal difference of +3. South Africa, meanwhile, remained without a point after the defeat and slipped to a goal difference of -3. The result put France in a strong position in the battle for the classification places.
In the other Pool H match, Ireland defeated Malaysia 3–0. Ireland's three-goal margin earned them three points and a +3 goal difference, placing them at the top of the classification pool after the opening round of matches. Malaysia collected no points and had a -3 goal difference. The result meant Ireland had made the strongest possible start to their classification campaign.
The first match in Pool F of the second round produced another narrow contest, with Australia defeating Belgium 1–0. The one-goal victory gave Australia three points and a +1 goal difference, while Belgium were left with zero points and a -1 goal difference. Australia's clean-sheet victory was particularly valuable because goal difference could become decisive in a closely contested four-team pool.
The second Pool F fixture was equally tight as Germany defeated Spain 1–0. Germany therefore joined Australia on three points with a +1 goal difference. Spain, despite losing by only one goal, received no points and began the second round with a -1 goal difference. The two 1–0 results meant that Pool F was perfectly poised after the opening day, with Germany and Australia occupying the leading positions.
The day's results produced an interesting statistical picture. Seven goals were scored across the four matches, with an average of 1.75 goals per match. Three of the four games were decided by a single goal or fewer, while three teams—South Africa, Malaysia and Spain—failed to score. The clean sheets by Australia and Germany were particularly significant, demonstrating the defensive nature of the opening second-round encounters.
The second-round structure means that every point has considerable importance. Pool E consists of England, the Netherlands, India and Argentina, while Pool F contains Germany, Australia, Spain and Belgium. The top two teams in each pool will qualify for the semi-finals, making the results on Day 7 an important first step towards the knockout stage.
From a tournament perspective, Australia and Germany made ideal starts in Pool F, both taking three points without conceding. Ireland also made an excellent start in Pool H, while France's three-goal victory kept them firmly in contention for the classification positions. Belgium, Spain, Malaysia and South Africa will need improved results in their remaining matches to climb the standings.
Overall, Day 7 was characterised by tight defensive hockey and low-scoring matches. The four fixtures produced three clean sheets and no match saw more than three goals. With the tournament now entering its decisive phase, the emphasis has shifted from simply progressing from the opening round to accumulating points and protecting goal difference. The results on 21 August therefore set up a highly competitive second round, with Germany and Australia particularly well placed after their opening victories.
