Bangladesh script historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in 1st Test at Darwin

 


Bangladesh created Test cricket history on Sunday, August 16, completing a stunning nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin. The result was Bangladesh's first-ever Test victory on Australian soil, and it gave them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The Test, part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, finished inside four days. 


Australia resumed the fourth morning at 161/4, still 67 runs behind Bangladesh's imposing first-innings 426. Their hopes rested largely on Cameron Green and Alex Carey, but Bangladesh's bowlers quickly regained control. Carey was dismissed for 27 and Beau Webster fell for 17, leaving Australia in serious trouble. Green, however, produced a magnificent counter-attacking innings to keep the hosts alive. 


Green completed his third Test century, scoring 104, and provided the backbone of Australia's second innings. His resistance was eventually ended by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, whose outstanding spell broke Australia's last serious hopes of setting a challenging target. Green's century took Australia to 284 all out, leaving Bangladesh only 57 runs to win. 


Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the chief destroyer on the fourth day, finishing with 5/66, while Hasan Mahmud continued his superb match by taking 3/56 in the second innings. Hasan finished with nine wickets in the match, earning the Player of the Match award. Miraz's five-wicket haul was particularly significant because it made him the first Bangladesh spinner to take a Test five-for in Australia. 


Bangladesh's target of 57 initially suffered a minor setback when Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for a duck. But there was no further drama. Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque calmly negotiated Australia's attack and took Bangladesh across the finishing line, completing the chase at 57/1. The winning runs triggered jubilant celebrations among the Bangladesh players and support staff. 


The victory was built on a remarkable turnaround after Australia had appeared to possess the advantage on paper. Bangladesh's bowlers bowled Australia out for just 198 in the first innings, with Hasan Mahmud claiming 6/55, before Tanzid Hasan's century and valuable contributions throughout the Bangladesh innings lifted them to 426—a massive first-innings lead of 228 runs. 


The victory also ended a long wait for Bangladesh, who had last played a Test in Australia in 2003. Their first Test against Australia on this tour therefore came after a 23-year gap, making the magnitude of the achievement even greater.

This was much more than an ordinary Test victory. Bangladesh dominated Australia with both bat and ball and became only the latest side to record a landmark overseas triumph. Their previous major breakthrough victories included their first Test win in New Zealand in 2022 and their historic 2017 victory over Australia in Dhaka. The Darwin triumph now stands among the greatest achievements in Bangladesh's Test history.
