Day 2 of Hockey World Cup 2026: Australia, Netherlands ,Belgium Shine as India Women Hold China

The second day of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 produced a mixture of commanding victories, thrilling contests and impressive comebacks as the tournament continued simultaneously in Wavre, Belgium, and Amstelveen, the Netherlands. Eight matches—four in the men's competition and four in the women's tournament—were played on Sunday, August 16, with Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, Argentina, England and Belgium among the winners.

Australia Begin with a 3-1 Victory

Three-time champions Australia made a winning start in Pool C of the men's tournament, defeating Ireland 3-1. Joel Rintala was the architect of the Australian victory, scoring twice from penalty corners. Blake Govers added Australia's third goal, taking his international tally to an impressive 167 goals. Ireland fought back through Alistair Empey after the interval and created late pressure, but goalkeeper Ash Thomas and the Australian defence held firm. Liam Henderson was named Player of the Match.

Spain Overcome South Africa

Spain also opened their Pool C campaign with a 3-1 victory over South Africa. The Red Sticks made a blistering start, with Marc Reyné and José Basterra scoring within a minute of each other in the opening quarter. Basterra struck again before half-time to put Spain 3-0 ahead. South Africa improved considerably after the break and Mustapha Cassiem pulled one back from a penalty corner, but Spain's defence resisted the pressure to secure three valuable points.

Netherlands Recover from Early Shock

The Netherlands produced one of the day's biggest comebacks in the men's competition, recovering from a goal down to defeat New Zealand 5-1 in Pool A. James Hickson gave the Black Sticks a surprise lead in the 23rd minute, but the hosts transformed the match after half-time. Tjep Hoedemakers equalised in the 35th minute before Duco Telgenkamp put the Netherlands ahead in the 41st. Thierry Brinkman, Hoedemakers again and Koen Bijen then completed a five-goal second-half surge.

Argentina Beat Japan 3-0

Argentina completed a convincing 3-0 victory over Japan in the other Pool A men's match. Joaquín Toscani broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after good work from Nicolás Keenan. Lucio Méndez doubled Argentina's advantage in the 54th minute, while Maico Casella helped Martin Ferreiro's effort across the line four minutes later to seal the win. Japan competed bravely but were unable to convert their opportunities.

England Make Strong Women's Start

England began their women's Pool D campaign impressively, defeating South Africa 4-0. Darcy Bourne and Tessa Howard put England in control before Elizabeth Neal added a third from a penalty corner just before half-time. Sophie Hamilton completed the scoring in the third quarter with a fine reverse-stick finish. The result gave England their first victory in a Women's World Cup opener since 2010.

India Hold Olympic Silver Medallists China

India produced one of the most encouraging performances of the day, holding world No. 4 China to a 2-2 draw in Pool D. Navneet Kaur gave India an eighth-minute lead, but Zhang Ying equalised from a penalty stroke just before the end of the opening quarter. Deepika restored India's lead in the 25th minute following a penalty-corner deflection, only for Ma Ning to level for China in the 39th minute. India defended strongly under pressure in the closing stages to secure a valuable point.

The draw was particularly significant because China entered the tournament as Olympic silver medallists, while India had a large number of World Cup debutants. It provided India with an important early point in a difficult Pool D.

Belgium Rally to Beat New Zealand

Hosts Belgium survived an early scare before defeating New Zealand 5-2 in the women's Pool C encounter. New Zealand struck first through a fourth-minute penalty-corner rebound, but Belgium responded quickly through Stephanie Vanden Borre and Emma Puvrez. Charlotte Englebert extended the lead before Hannah Cotter reduced the deficit for the Black Sticks. Justine Rasir then scored twice in the second half to complete Belgium's comeback and secure a convincing victory.

Spain Edge Ireland in a Thriller

Spain's women completed the day's action with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Ireland. Laia Vidosa gave Spain the lead in the second quarter, but Ireland equalised through Hannah McLoughlin after half-time. Both teams subsequently exchanged penalty-corner goals before Spain captain Xantal Giné struck the decisive goal five minutes from the final whistle. The victory gave Spain an important three points in Pool C.

A Day of Strong Statements

Day 2 underlined the competitive nature of the 2026 World Cup. Australia, Spain, Argentina and the Netherlands made winning starts in the men's tournament, while England, Belgium and Spain collected three points in the women's competition. For India, the women's team earned a valuable draw against one of the tournament's strongest sides, China, keeping their Pool D campaign firmly alive.

With the revised World Cup format placing enormous importance on the pool matches, every point gained in the opening phase could prove crucial when teams battle for places in the next stage. The tournament continues through August 30, with the men's and women's competitions being staged across Wavre and Amstelveen.
