Hockey World Cup 2026: Day 3 Brings High Drama, India’s Setback and Big Wins

The third day of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 in Belgium and the Netherlands produced an action-packed programme, with eight matches across the men’s and women’s competitions. There were dramatic late goals, high-scoring contests and several important results that reshaped the pool standings. Germany and England emerged as the men’s pool leaders, while the Netherlands and Argentina strengthened their positions in the women’s competition.

India suffer a 2-4 defeat against England

India endured a major setback in Pool D, going down 2-4 to England in an entertaining contest. England took the lead in the 13th minute through Nick Bandurak after Stuart Rushmere created the opening. India responded quickly, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner before Dilpreet Singh put India ahead to make it 2-1.

England, however, produced a superb second-half comeback. Rushmere equalised in the 38th minute and Henry Croft put England ahead four minutes later. Bandurak then scored his second goal from a penalty corner in the 54th minute to complete a 4-2 victory. Stuart Rushmere was named Player of the Match.

The defeat leaves India under considerable pressure ahead of their crucial Pool D meeting with Pakistan. India had opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Wales, but the loss to England means their final pool match will carry enormous significance in the race for qualification.

Pakistan and Wales share six-goal thriller

Pakistan and Wales played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Pakistan took an early lead through Abdul Rehman in the third minute, but Wales turned the match around after Sufyan Khan received a five-minute yellow card. Gareth Furlong and Rhys Bradshaw scored within a minute of each other to give Wales a 2-1 half-time advantage.

Pakistan fought back in the second half. Sufyan Khan equalised in the 49th minute before Hannan Shahid put Pakistan ahead two minutes later. Wales refused to surrender, with Furlong converting a penalty stroke in the 53rd minute to make it 3-3. Neither side could find a winner despite late opportunities.

Germany edge Belgium in repeat of World Cup final

Defending champions Germany produced one of the day's biggest results by defeating hosts Belgium 1-0 in Pool B. The match was a repeat of the previous men's World Cup final, but this time Germany again came out on top.

Belgium dominated much of the first half and created 26 circle entries, compared with Germany's 12, but could not convert their opportunities. Germany made their key chance count when Jakob Brilla scored from a penalty corner in the 39th minute. Belgium also earned six penalty corners to Germany's two, yet Germany's defence held firm to secure a crucial victory.

France and Malaysia produce another thriller

France and Malaysia finished 3-3 in another dramatic Pool B encounter. Malaysia scored first, but France equalised through Victor Charlet from their first penalty corner. France subsequently moved ahead, only for Malaysia to fight back.

Akhimullah Anuar put Malaysia 3-2 ahead with just over three minutes remaining. France removed their goalkeeper and were rewarded when Timothée Clément equalised with only a minute left. Malaysia appeared to score a last-gasp winner through Fitri Saari, but the goal was disallowed for a back-stick infringement.

Netherlands women defeat Australia

The Netherlands women underlined their credentials with a 4-2 victory over Australia in Pool A. Yibbi Jansen opened the scoring in the 13th minute with her 100th international goal, before Joosje Burg doubled the Dutch advantage.

Australia responded through Stephanie Kershaw and Abigail Wilson to level the contest at 2-2. The Netherlands regained control, however, with Burg scoring her second from a penalty-corner variation before Marijn Veen completed the 4-2 victory.

Argentina edge Germany in women's thriller

Argentina defeated Germany 3-2 in Pool B after another dramatic encounter. Germany recovered from a two-goal deficit to level the match, but Agustina Gorzelany scored her second goal in the 56th minute to give Argentina all three points. The result placed Argentina at the top of Pool B at the end of Day 3.

Japan and USA record important wins

Japan secured their first victory of the tournament by defeating Chile 3-0. Miyu Hasegawa, Hiroka Murayama and Maho Ueno scored as Japan built a three-goal advantage in the first half. Chile improved after the interval but could not break through.

The USA also claimed a 3-2 victory over Scotland. Seventeen-year-old Reese D’Ariano opened the scoring in the fourth minute, while Sophia Gladieux restored the American lead after Scotland had equalised. A further USA penalty-corner goal made it 3-1 before Scotland pulled one back, but the Americans held on for three valuable points.

Day 3 results at a glance

Women: Japan 3-0 Chile; USA 3-2 Scotland; Argentina 3-2 Germany; Netherlands 4-2 Australia.

Men: Pakistan 3-3 Wales; France 3-3 Malaysia; India 2-4 England; Germany 1-0 Belgium.

India now face a must-win battle

India's defeat to England has significantly increased the pressure in Pool D. England now have six points from two matches, while India and Pakistan have important ground to recover after their respective results. With India scheduled to meet Pakistan next, the Asian heavyweight clash has become one of the most important fixtures of the opening phase. The official FIH schedule confirms the India-Pakistan Pool D encounter for August 19.

Overall, Day 3 demonstrated the competitiveness of the 2026 World Cup. Germany's defensive resilience, England's second-half comeback against India, the Pakistan-Wales and France-Malaysia thrillers, and strong performances by the Netherlands and Argentina made it one of the tournament's most eventful days so far.
