US Open 2026: Navone’s stunning Djokovic shocker caps dramatic opening day

 


The 2026 US Open burst into life at Flushing Meadows on Sunday, August 30, with a riveting opening day that produced commanding performances from several leading contenders—but also delivered one of the most sensational first-round upsets in recent Grand Slam history.

The biggest headline belonged to Mariano Navone, who stunned fourth seed and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a bruising four-hour, 36-minute encounter on Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was Djokovic's first first-round defeat at a Grand Slam since 2006. 


Djokovic initially appeared to be in control after recovering from losing the opening-set tiebreak to take the second and third sets. But the physically troubled Serb gradually faded. He struggled with cramping, pain and repeated bouts of vomiting, while Navone remained remarkably composed. The Argentine seized the fourth set 6-2 before racing through the decider 6-1 to complete a sensational career-defining victory. 


The shock was particularly significant because Djokovic had been chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title and a fifth US Open crown. Instead, his campaign ended abruptly on opening night, leaving the men's draw dramatically more open.

Earlier, Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 champion and No. 7 seed, produced a polished start, dispatching French qualifier Hugo Gaston 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Medvedev, who had struggled for wins during the summer hard-court swing, looked considerably more assured as he negotiated his opening assignment. 


American Tommy Paul also survived an early scare. Coleman Wong took the opening set in a tiebreak, but Paul responded emphatically, winning the next three sets 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. The American's recovery underlined his resilience and ensured another home favourite advanced to the second round. 


There were other notable men's results. Jiri Lehecka defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2, while qualifier Toby Samuel announced himself with an impressive 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tomas Machac. British hope Cameron Norrie, however, suffered a disappointing defeat to France's Luca Van Assche, who prevailed 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. 


Pegula leads strong women's charge

On the women's side, third seed Jessica Pegula made an authoritative start on Arthur Ashe Stadium, defeating Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-2 in just 83 minutes. Pegula struck 26 winners against 14 unforced errors and created 17 break-point opportunities, converting four. 


Ninth seed Elina Svitolina was equally impressive, brushing aside Argentina's Solana Sierra 6-1, 6-2 in only 51–52 minutes. Her aggressive, accurate tennis left Sierra struggling to find a foothold. 


Italy's Jasmine Paolini, seeded 19th, had to work considerably harder. Returning to competition after a foot injury, she overcame Slovenian debutant Veronika Erjavec 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Paolini finished with 36 winners and showed admirable composure after surrendering the second set. 


The day's major women's upset came from Kamilla Rakhimova, who ousted 27th seed and former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova 7-6(4), 6-2. WTA noted that seeded players went 6-1 on Day 1, with Rakhimova's victory the lone upset among the seeded players. 


Former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova also produced a remarkable comeback. Trailing Hanne Vandewinkel 2-6, 2-5, she saved a match point and reeled off nine consecutive games to prevail 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 after two and a half hours. 


A memorable opening day

The first day therefore offered almost everything a Grand Slam could promise: authoritative victories, tense comebacks, emerging stars and, above all, a seismic upset.

For Djokovic, it was a deeply disappointing and physically gruelling farewell. For Navone, it was a career-defining triumph that instantly transformed him into one of the stories of the tournament.

With the men's draw suddenly deprived of one of its greatest champions and several leading contenders still to begin their campaigns, the 2026 US Open has already acquired an unmistakably unpredictable and thrilling character.

Manipur violence : Video of brutality relating to women in Manipur goes viral
