US Open 2026: Day 10 — American Thunder as Tiafoe and Shelton Reach Semifinals, Alcaraz crashes out

 


Day 10 of the 2026 US Open produced a spectacular night of quarter-final tennis, with Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton powering into the men’s semifinals, while Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula advanced in the women’s draw. The day was defined by dramatic comebacks, deciding-set tie-breaks and a stunning exit for defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz. 


Tiafoe stages sensational comeback

American 11th seed Frances Tiafoe produced one of the day’s most stirring performances, recovering from two sets down to defeat compatriot Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(10-6).

Michelsen, enjoying the deepest Grand Slam run of his career, looked firmly in command after taking the opening two sets. But Tiafoe gradually turned the contest around with aggressive returning, powerful groundstrokes and increasingly confident serving.

The 28-year-old American eventually prevailed after 4 hours and 38 minutes, completing one of the tournament's most memorable comebacks. Michelsen struck 21 aces, but crucial double faults while serving for the match proved costly. 


Tiafoe's reward is a semifinal against fellow American Ben Shelton, guaranteeing an American finalist from that side of the draw.

Shelton dethrones defending champion Alcaraz

In the tournament's other extraordinary men's quarter-final, eighth seed Ben Shelton stunned defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a breathtaking five-set battle.

Shelton prevailed 6-7(5-7), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) after 4 hours and 28 minutes of ferocious tennis. The contest finished at 3:33 a.m., becoming the latest-ending match in US Open history. 


Alcaraz, returning after a lengthy injury layoff, produced flashes of his brilliant best, but Shelton's explosive serving and fearless shot-making eventually carried him through the decisive tie-break.

The result guarantees that the men's US Open champion will be a new winner, while the United States is assured of a finalist. It is also Shelton's first Grand Slam semifinal. 


Sabalenka survives a monumental test

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka kept her dream of a historic third consecutive US Open crown alive by edging Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-6(10-7).

Noskova pushed the defending champion to the absolute limit, producing 18 aces and recovering from an early deficit. Sabalenka herself appeared vulnerable in the deciding set, falling behind 2-4, but the Belarusian summoned her trademark power and resilience to force another tie-break. 


Sabalenka's victory sends her into the US Open semifinals for a remarkable sixth consecutive year and extends her tournament winning streak to 18 matches. 


She is now only two victories away from becoming the first woman since Serena Williams to win the US Open three years in succession.

Pegula wins all-American battle

Third seed Jessica Pegula completed the women's quarter-final programme with a determined comeback against fellow American Emma Navarro, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Navarro made the stronger start, but Pegula gradually wrested control through consistent baseline play and superior composure in the crucial stages. She broke twice in the deciding set to close out another impressive victory. 


Pegula's reward is a blockbuster semifinal against Sabalenka. It will be her third consecutive US Open semifinal, continuing an impressive run of consistency in New York. 


A day of extraordinary drama

Day 10 will be remembered as one of the tournament's most dramatic days. All four completed singles quarter-finals went to deciding sets, while the men's session delivered two marathon American victories and the shock elimination of defending champion Alcaraz. 


With Tiafoe facing Shelton in an all-American men's semifinal and Sabalenka meeting Pegula in the women's draw, the 2026 US Open has entered its decisive phase with American hopes soaring and the defending men's champion gone.

Manipur violence : Video of brutality relating to women in Manipur goes viral
