US Open 2026: Day 8 — Tiafoe Stuns Medvedev as American Charge Gathers Momentum

 


New York, September 6, 2026: Day 8 of the US Open 2026 delivered a compelling blend of high-quality tennis, American triumphs and major quarter-final breakthroughs as the fourth round concluded at Flushing Meadows. The day’s biggest headlines came from Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Carlos Alcaraz, Alex Michelsen, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula, all of whom booked their places in the last eight. 


Tiafoe produces stunning Medvedev upset

The most dramatic men’s singles contest saw Frances Tiafoe defeat former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in a pulsating straight-set battle, winning 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6).

Tiafoe displayed remarkable composure in the crucial moments, particularly in the two tiebreaks. His aggressive net play and attacking tennis repeatedly disrupted Medvedev's rhythm. The victory was especially impressive given that Tiafoe had previously trailed Medvedev 1-6 in their head-to-head record. 


The charismatic American remains unbeaten in 10 appearances at Louis Armstrong Stadium and now faces compatriot Alex Michelsen in an intriguing all-American quarter-final. 


Shelton overwhelms Tsitsipas

Ben Shelton produced one of the day's most emphatic performances, dismantling eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

Shelton needed only 31 minutes to capture the opening set, combining explosive serving with relentless baseline aggression. Tsitsipas struggled physically and required a medical timeout during the second set. 


Shelton's reward is a blockbuster quarter-final against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The American's progress has further intensified hopes of ending the long wait for a homegrown men's Grand Slam champion—the last American man to win a major was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. 


Alcaraz marches on

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his commanding run by defeating American Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

The Spaniard once again looked increasingly comfortable on Arthur Ashe Stadium, combining powerful groundstrokes, athletic defence and imaginative shot-making. His straight-set victory ensured that he entered the quarter-finals without the physical toll of a marathon encounter. 


His meeting with Shelton promises to be one of the most anticipated quarter-finals of the tournament.

Michelsen reaches first Grand Slam quarter-final

American youngster Alex Michelsen enjoyed a breakthrough moment, defeating Argentina's Tomás Martín Etcheverry 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-4.

Michelsen's victory earned him a place in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, while also setting up an all-American clash with the in-form Tiafoe. 


Sabalenka safely through

In the women's draw, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka maintained her title defence with a straight-set victory over American Taylor Townsend.

Sabalenka's powerful serve and destructive groundstrokes once again proved decisive as she secured her passage into the quarter-finals. She will next face Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, who battled past Marta Kostyuk in three sets. 


Pegula advances

American sixth seed Jessica Pegula also moved into the quarter-finals after overcoming Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-4.

Pegula had to negotiate a competitive opening set before taking control, eventually sealing victory in straight sets. The result keeps alive her hopes of going one step further than her 2024 US Open runner-up finish. 


American tennis enjoys a memorable day

Perhaps the defining feature of Day 8 was the remarkable strength of American men's tennis. Alcaraz's quarter-final opponent Shelton, Tiafoe and Michelsen all progressed, guaranteeing an American presence in both of the quarter-final matches involving those players.

The men's quarter-final picture now includes the tantalising clashes Alcaraz vs Shelton and Tiafoe vs Michelsen.

Manipur violence : Video of brutality relating to women in Manipur goes viral
