UEFA Nations League 2026: Matchday 2 - Portugal beat Norway, Greece stun Germany
The second round of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League continued on Sunday, September 27, with eight matches across Leagues A, B and D. The major highlights came from Greece’s historic victory over Germany, Portugal’s away win against Norway and the Netherlands’ hard-fought success in Serbia.
Netherlands edge Serbia in Belgrade: The Netherlands secured a valuable 2-1 victory over Serbia in Group A2. Mexx Meerdink gave the Dutch the lead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, while Serbia levelled shortly after half-time through substitute Luka Jović. Meerdink then struck again in the 69th minute to give the Netherlands all three points. The result kept the Dutch unbeaten after their opening 1-1 draw with Germany.
Greece stun Germany: One of the biggest results of the night came in Augsburg, where Greece defeated Germany 1-0. Dimitris Kourbelis scored in the 74th minute with a deflected effort after Greece had sustained pressure on the German defence. It was Greece's first-ever victory over Germany, ending a run of ten previous meetings without a win. Germany, meanwhile, remained without a victory after two matches under head coach Jürgen Klopp, following their opening draw against the Netherlands.
Portugal overcome Norway in Oslo: Portugal maintained their winning start with a 2-1 victory over Norway in Group A4. João Félix opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Erling Haaland equalised for Norway shortly after half-time. Gonçalo Ramos restored Portugal's advantage in the 54th minute, and the visitors held on for three points. Portugal had opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Wales, while Norway had previously beaten Denmark 3-2.
Denmark defeat Wales: Denmark also collected their first points of the campaign with a 2-0 home win over Wales in Copenhagen. An own goal by Wales defender Neco Williams Davies in the 53rd minute put Denmark ahead, before Gustav Isaksen doubled the advantage in the 66th minute. Wales, who had lost 1-0 to Portugal in their opening game, remain without a point.
Austria beat Kosovo: In League B Group 3, Austria defeated Kosovo 3-1 in Vienna. Austria established control with goals from Alexander Affengruber and Muhammed-Çam Saracevic Adamu before Chukwuemeka added a third in the second half. Kosovo pulled one back through Edon Zhegrova from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute, but Austria held on comfortably.
Republic of Ireland produce convincing win: The Republic of Ireland recorded their first victory of the campaign by defeating Israel 3-0 in Debrecen. After losing 1-0 to Kosovo in their opening match, Ireland responded strongly to take three points and a clean sheet, while Israel suffered their second successive defeat following their 3-1 loss to Austria.
Lithuania and Azerbaijan draw: In League D Group 2, Lithuania drew 1-1 with Azerbaijan. The result left both teams with a point from their meeting, while Lithuania had entered the match after beating Liechtenstein 2-0 in their opening fixture.
Gibraltar and Andorra share points: The day's other League D fixture ended Gibraltar 0-0 Andorra. Neither side could break the deadlock, giving both teams their first point of the league phase. Gibraltar had not played in Matchday 1, while Andorra had previously lost 2-1 to Malta.
Overall, September 27 produced several significant results in League A. Greece's historic win over Germany and Portugal's victory in Norway were the headline results, while the Netherlands continued their unbeaten start and Denmark bounced back from their opening defeat.
