Asian Games 2026: Day 5 Report — China strengthens lead as Japan and South Korea maintain top-three positions

 


The fifth day of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 saw the medal race becoming increasingly intense, with China continuing to establish a substantial lead at the top of the standings. Japan, competing on home soil, remained second, while South Korea held third position. Kazakhstan and Iran completed the top five at the end of the day's reported medal standings. China had accumulated 75 gold, 26 silver and 17 bronze medals, while Japan had 19 gold, 29 silver and 37 bronze. South Korea stood on 10 gold, 12 silver and 28 bronze, followed by Kazakhstan with 8 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze, and Iran with 6 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze. �

China continued to dominate the Games across a wide range of disciplines. Its haul of 118 medals, including 75 gold, gave it a sizeable advantage over the rest of the field. Chinese athletes continued to collect medals in rowing, shooting and other events on Day 5, maintaining the country's position at the head of the table. The large number of gold medals was particularly significant because Asian Games standings are primarily ordered by gold-medal count. �

Kazakhstan also enjoyed a notable day in cycling, where Alexey Lutsenko won the men's road race, securing his sixth Asian Games gold medal and becoming Kazakhstan's most successful Asian Games athlete in terms of gold medals. His victory added another significant highlight to Kazakhstan's campaign. �

Iran rounded out the top five with 6 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals, giving it 19 medals. Iran's position illustrated the importance of gold medals in the standings: despite several countries having higher overall medal totals in some categories, Iran remained fifth because of its six gold medals. The top five therefore consisted of China, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan and Iran at this stage of the competition. �

For India, Day 5 produced a five-medal haul across wushu, athletics, shooting and rowing. Naorem Roshibina Devi won silver in the women's 60kg wushu event, giving her a medal at three consecutive Asian Games. Seema claimed bronze in the women's 10,000m, while India's mixed 4x400m relay quartet won silver. Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Parinaaz Dhaliwal secured bronze in mixed-team skeet, and Satnam Singh and Salman Khan won bronze in the men's double sculls, India's first Asian Games medal in that event. �

India also remained competitive in the team events, with progress in kabaddi and hockey adding to the day's sporting picture. The five medals took India's tally, according to the latest reported table, to 15 — one gold, six silver and eight bronze, placing the country 14th in that particular updated table.

Manipur violence : Video of brutality relating to women in Manipur goes viral
