Sutherland brilliant 100 & shocking Indian batting display put Australia women on verge of test win
India Women are staring at a heavy defeat against Australia in the day-night Test in Perth. At the end of the second day’s play, the one-day world champions found themselves firmly on the back foot after another disappointing batting performance.
Replying to India’s modest first-innings total of 198, Australia posted a commanding 323, securing a sizeable 125-run lead. By stumps on Saturday, India were struggling at 105 for 6 in their second innings and still trail by 20 runs.
Just like the first innings, India’s batting line-up crumbled under pressure. While Jemimah Rodrigues had shown resistance earlier, the second innings saw only Pratika Rawal offer any real fight. The Indian batters looked uncomfortable against Australia’s disciplined pace attack on the Perth pitch.
Smriti Mandhana (2), Shafali Verma (5), Jemimah (14), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (11), Deepti Sharma (9) and Richa Ghosh (0) all failed to make an impact, unable to read or counter the sharp Australian bowling. With the team already trailing by 125 runs after the first innings, a determined response was expected, but the batters fell well short of that mark.
The lone exception was Pratika Rawal at No. 3. She held firm at one end but received little support from the other. At the close of play, Rawal remained unbeaten on 43, with Sneh Rana providing some late resistance on 14 not out.
For Australia, Lucy Hamilton led the bowling effort brilliantly with 3 for 32. Annabel Sutherland claimed 2 for 15, while Darcie Brown picked up one wicket for 37.
Earlier in the morning session, Australia consolidated their position through a crucial 128-run partnership between the overnight batters Annabel Sutherland and Ellyse Perry. Perry played a fluent knock of 76, striking 10 boundaries and a six. Sutherland produced a superb century, scoring 129 off a confident innings that included 17 fours.
Although Australia’s lower order did not contribute heavily, the strong third-wicket stand ensured the hosts stayed in control. Alana King (21) and Hamilton (23) added useful runs late on, putting together a 34-run partnership for the ninth wicket.
Among the Indian bowlers, Sayali Satghare was the most successful with 4 for 50. Deepti Sharma and Kranti Gaud picked up two wickets each, while Sneh Rana and Shafali Verma claimed one wicket apiece.
