India booked their place in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026 after defeating England by a thrilling seven-run margin in the second semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium. In a high-scoring contest packed with drama, India posted a formidable 253 for 7 in 20 overs. England responded bravely but fell just short, finishing on 246 for 7 despite a magnificent century from Jacob Bethell.

England required 30 runs in the final over and managed to score 22, but India held their nerve to seal victory. Bethell was the standout performer for England with a sensational 105. For India, Hardik Pandya claimed two wickets, while Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel took one each.

India will now face New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Bethell’s Century Keeps England in the Hunt

Chasing a daunting target of 254, England did not begin well and lost two early wickets at 38. Phil Salt (5) and captain Harry Brook (7) were dismissed cheaply, putting early pressure on the chase. Varun Chakravarthy then removed Jos Buttler in the sixth over to give India their third breakthrough. Buttler scored 25 from 17 balls with four fours and a six.

Axar Patel soon bowled Tom Banton (17), leaving England in further trouble. However, Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell launched a counter-attack with a blistering 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket that revived England’s hopes. Arshdeep Singh eventually broke the stand in the 14th over by dismissing Jacks for a brisk 35 off 20 balls, which included four fours and two sixes.

Hardik Pandya struck again in the 19th over, removing Sam Curran for 18 and shifting the momentum back in India’s favour. The decisive moment came in the final over when Shivam Dube ran out Bethell off the first ball, delivering a major blow to England’s chances.

Bethell’s remarkable knock of 105 came off just 48 balls and featured eight fours and seven towering sixes. England eventually finished on 246 for 7 in their 20 overs, falling short by seven runs despite a late flourish from Jofra Archer, who smashed three sixes to remain unbeaten on 19.

England’s Powerplay Performance

England collected 13 runs in the opening over of the innings, hitting three boundaries off Arshdeep Singh. Hardik Pandya struck in his first over by dismissing Phil Salt for five while conceding only two runs.

Arshdeep’s next over went for 10 runs, while England scored 13 from Pandya’s following over. Jasprit Bumrah then removed Harry Brook with the first ball of his spell. Varun Chakravarthy’s first over proved eventful as Bethell smashed three consecutive sixes before the spinner dismissed Jos Buttler. England ended the powerplay strongly by scoring 15 runs off Pandya’s final over of the phase.

India Post a Massive Total

Earlier, India produced a powerful batting display to score 253 for 7 after being asked to bat first. Sanju Samson led the charge with a blazing 89, while Shivam Dube contributed 43 and Ishan Kishan added 39. For England, Will Jacks and Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each.

India made a rapid start, reaching 67 for 1 in the powerplay thanks to Samson’s aggressive strokeplay. He set the tone early, attacking Jofra Archer with a series of boundaries and sixes. Archer was unlucky when captain Harry Brook dropped a straightforward catch at mid-on, allowing Samson to punish the error with two fours and a six in the same over.

Samson Continues Fine Form

Abhishek Sharma (9) struck two boundaries off Will Jacks but soon perished, lofting a catch to Phil Salt at deep mid-wicket. Ishan Kishan then joined Samson and kept the momentum going, hitting consecutive boundaries off Jamie Overton. Samson continued his assault, striking Sam Curran for boundaries as well.

The wicketkeeper-batter brought up his second successive half-century in just 26 balls, smashing a six off Liam Dawson after opening his account against Adil Rashid with a boundary. Kishan also cleared the ropes against Dawson as India raced past the 100-run mark in the ninth over.

Kishan eventually departed for 39 off 18 balls, an entertaining knock that included four fours and two sixes. Shivam Dube continued the momentum by launching two sixes off Rashid, while Samson hammered Archer for two more maximums before finally being caught by Salt off Jacks.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav added a quick six but was stumped off the very next delivery from Rashid. Hardik Pandya then struck three boundaries off Overton to propel India past the 200-run mark in the 17th over, setting up a massive total that ultimately proved decisive in the thrilling semi-final.
