South Africa beat Zimbabwe, Set Up T20 World Cup SF Clash with New Zealand in T20IWC
Unbeaten South Africa marched into the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after registering their seventh consecutive win. Led by Aiden Markram, the Proteas defeated Zimbabwe by five wickets in their final Super Eight match on Sunday.
Zimbabwe, powered by a fine all-round effort from Sikandar Raza, posted 153 for 7 after being asked to bat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In reply, South Africa chased down the target in 17.5 overs, finishing on 154 for 5. They will now face New Zealand national cricket team in the first semi-final at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
South Africa had a shaky start, losing two wickets for just 14 runs. Markram managed only 4, while Quinton de Kock was dismissed for a duck.
The innings was stabilised by Ryan Rickelton and Dewald Brevis. Rickelton struck 31 off 22 balls, including four sixes, while Brevis counter-attacked with a brisk 42 off 18 deliveries, smashing two fours and four sixes.
David Miller contributed 22 off 16 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes. Eventually, George Linde (30* off 21) and Tristan Stubbs (21* off 24) guided the team home with an unbroken partnership.
Raza was Zimbabwe’s standout bowler, claiming 3 for 29 and troubling the South African batters throughout. Brad Evans picked up 1 for 22, while Blessing Muzarabani returned figures of 1 for 32.
After winning the toss, Raza opted to bat first. However, Zimbabwe struggled early, losing two wickets for 28. Openers Tadiwanashe Marumani (7) and Brian Bennett (15) fell cheaply, and Dion Myers managed just 11.
Raza then anchored the innings almost single-handedly. While wickets kept tumbling at the other end — Ryan Burl (5) and Tony Munyonga (2) failed to contribute — he stood firm.
He found some support from Clive Madande, who remained unbeaten on 26 off 20 balls. Raza’s brilliant 73 off 43 deliveries, featuring eight fours and four sixes, lifted Zimbabwe to a competitive total, though it ultimately proved insufficient.
For South Africa, Kwena Maphaka and Corbin Bosch claimed two wickets each, while Linde, Lungi Ngidi, and Anrich Nortje chipped in with one apiece.
South Africa now carry formidable momentum into the knockouts, with their unbeaten run making them one of the favourites for the title.
