The Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in the Himalayan state of Sikkim. Located at Legship on the banks of the Rangit River, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here in the form of Kirateshwar Mahadev.

The temple is associated with a famous episode from the Mahabharata, where Lord Shiva appeared as a Kirata (tribal hunter) to test the warrior Arjuna. Because of this legend, the shrine is also called Kirateshwar Mahadev, meaning “Shiva in the form of the Kirata hunter.”

Today the temple is an important religious centre for devotees from Sikkim, West Bengal, Nepal, and Bhutan, and is regarded as one of the most spiritually powerful Shiva shrines in the eastern Himalayas.

Mythological Origin

According to the Mahabharata, during the exile of the Pandavas, Arjuna performed severe penance to obtain the divine weapon Pashupatastra from Lord Shiva.

During his meditation in the Himalayan forests, a demon named Muka appeared in the form of a wild boar. Both Arjuna and Shiva (disguised as a hunter) shot arrows at the animal simultaneously. A dispute arose about who had killed it.

The hunter challenged Arjuna to a duel. Despite being a great warrior, Arjuna was defeated. Realizing the hunter was no ordinary person, Arjuna prayed to Shiva. Lord Shiva then revealed his true form and blessed Arjuna with the Pashupatastra weapon.

It is believed that this divine encounter took place near present-day Legship, where the Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple now stands.

The temple is believed to have existed as a small shrine for centuries, maintained by local communities and pilgrims.

Later developments include:

Expansion during the Namgyal dynasty period of Sikkim.

Reconstruction and modernization by devotees and the Government of Sikkim.
