Australia Close In on 2–0 Ashes Lead as England Collapse on Day 3 of 2nd test

England’s struggle against Australia’s relentless bowling attack continued in the Ashes, a problem evident in both innings at Perth and now starkly exposed once again at Brisbane. In the day–night Test at the Gabba, Joe Root’s first-innings brilliance could not mask England’s batting frailties, and a second-innings collapse has put Australia firmly on course for victory by the end of Day Three.

England closed the day on 134 for 6, still 43 runs behind Australia with only four wickets in hand. Their hopes now rest solely on captain Ben Stokes and  Jacks , the last recognised pair at the crease.

Australia had resumed Day Three strongly from their overnight 378 for 6, already 44 runs ahead. Mitchell Starc extended that lead with a superb all-round performance—taking six wickets with the ball and then smashing 77 with the bat. Starc played some glorious drives through the off side . Carey contributed a fluent 63 & the lower order kept frustrating England. Supported by valuable contributions from the lower order, Australia powered their way to a formidable 511, securing a commanding first-innings lead of 177.

To stay alive in the contest, England needed a resilient response with the bat. The start was promising: the openers added 48. But as the day wore on, pressure mounted and wickets tumbled. Apart from Zak Crawley, who made 44, no top-order batter was able to settle. Ducket was bowled by Boland . Neser had two caught & bowled dismissals of Crawley & Pope(26) .  First-innings centurion Joe Root fell cheaply for 15 caught behind off Starc , and the rest of the batting faltered under the combined force of Starc, Scott Boland, and Michael Neser—each taking two wickets.

With England still trailing and only four wickets remaining, the prospect of a comeback appears remote. Australia, who outplayed England over two days in Perth, now stand on the brink of sealing a 2–0 lead in the series with a win in Brisbane.
