UEFA Nations League 2026/27: First Two Days Produce Thrilling Starts

 


The 2026/27 UEFA Nations League got underway on September 24, with the opening two days of the league phase producing several closely fought encounters, dramatic late goals and impressive individual performances. The fifth edition of the competition features 54 nations across Leagues A, B, C and D, with the league phase running from September to November. Portugal entered the tournament as defending champions after winning the 2025 edition. 


Germany's opening encounter with the Netherlands was one of the biggest attractions of the first day. Jürgen Klopp made his competitive debut as Germany coach against Xavi Hernández's Netherlands, and Germany appeared on course for victory after Felix Nmecha gave them the lead. However, Cody Gakpo struck a dramatic equaliser in the 92nd minute to earn the Netherlands a 1-1 draw. Both new coaches therefore began their Nations League campaigns with a point. 


Norway produced one of the most entertaining performances of the opening day, defeating Denmark 3-2 in Oslo. Oscar Bobb opened the scoring before Erling Haaland doubled the advantage. Denmark fought back through Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Højlund, but Haaland scored his second goal in the 74th minute to settle a five-goal thriller. His two-goal contribution immediately made him one of the standout performers of the opening round. 


Defending champions Portugal began their title defence with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wales. João Félix scored the only goal in the 22nd minute after receiving a pass from Nuno Mendes and finishing from outside the penalty area. Portugal controlled much of the game, although Wales came close to an equaliser when Brennan Johnson's attempted lob struck the crossbar. The result gave new Portugal coach Jorge Jesus a winning start. 


Greece also made an impressive start by defeating Serbia 2-1 away from home. Serbia took an early lead through Andrija Živković, but Greece responded through Christos Tzolis before substitute Tasos Douvikas scored the winning goal late in the match. In League B, Austria defeated Israel 3-1 after scoring twice in the final minutes, while Kosovo secured a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland through Vedat Muriqi's 83rd-minute header. 


The opening day also saw victories for Malta and Lithuania in League D. Malta came from behind to beat Andorra 2-1, while Lithuania defeated Liechtenstein 2-0. These results meant that the competition began with a mixture of tight League A contests and decisive results in the lower divisions. 


The second day of the opening round brought another set of important fixtures, with League A's Italy-Belgium and Türkiye-France matches among the headline games, while Hungary faced Ukraine, Poland met Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sweden played Romania in League B. Georgia also hosted Northern Ireland, while Armenia faced Latvia and Montenegro took on Cyprus in League C. 


The early phase of the competition has also created considerable interest because of the number of high-profile managerial changes. Klopp's Germany and Xavi's Netherlands met immediately in Amsterdam, while Jorge Jesus began his Portugal tenure with victory. France also entered a new era under Zinédine Zidane, making the Nations League an important early test for several European heavyweight nations after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 


After the first two days, the Nations League had already demonstrated its competitive nature, with Germany denied victory by a stoppage-time goal, Norway and Denmark producing a five-goal contest, and Portugal beginning their title defence with three points. With the remaining opening-round fixtures involving England, Spain, France, Italy and Croatia still to be completed on September 26, the first matchday was set to become even more significant before the second round begins on September 27.

Manipur violence : Video of brutality relating to women in Manipur goes viral
