The Murudeshwar Temple, located in Bhatkal Taluk, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, is one of the most awe-inspiring temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, Ravana, the king of Lanka and a great devotee of Lord Shiva, performed intense penance to obtain the Atma Linga, a divine manifestation of Lord Shiva’s soul, for immortality and power.

Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the Atma Linga but warned him not to place it on the ground before reaching Lanka, or else it would get permanently fixed there. Seeing this, the gods feared Ravana’s potential invincibility and sought Lord Vishnu’s help. On his way back to Lanka, Ravana stopped at Gokarna for prayers. At that moment, Lord Ganesha, disguised as a young Brahmin boy, tricked Ravana into placing the Atma Linga on the ground, where it got rooted permanently.

In anger, Ravana tried to uproot it, scattering parts of it around the region. The cloth covering (Murudesh) of the Linga is believed to have fallen at the present-day Murudeshwar, giving the place its name — Murudeshwar (meaning “Lord of the Cover”).

The original temple was constructed many centuries ago and later renovated and expanded by the R.N. Shetty Charitable Trust in the late 20th century, which added the grand Raja Gopuram and the massive Shiva statue that defines Murudeshwar’s skyline today.
