King Malayadhwaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamala performed a yagna to have a child. Goddess Parvati herself incarnated as Meenakshi, born with three breasts—a sign that her third breast would disappear when she met her future husband. When Meenakshi conquered lands and met Lord Shiva in Kailasa during her victory tour, the prophecy fulfilled, and the two married with divine grandeur. Their celestial wedding is celebrated annually as Meenakshi Thirukalyanam.

  • The original structure was built by the Pandya kings.
  • The temple was heavily damaged during the invasions of Malik Kafur in the 14th century.
  • It was magnificently rebuilt by the Madurai Nayak rulers, especially King Tirumala Nayak (17th century).
