Fraud : Teacher Dies After Falling Victim to WhatsApp Scam Impersonating Police

Telephone scams have caused many people to suffer financial losses, but this case may mark the first time such an attempted fraud has allegedly resulted in the loss of a life.

On Monday, 58-year-old Malti Verma, a teacher at a government school in Agra, received a WhatsApp call from a man whose display picture showed a police officer. The caller informed her that her college-going daughter had been caught in a sex trafficking ring.

Ms. Verma's son, Dipanshu, recounted that the call came around noon, and the man demanded that she deposit Rs 1 lakh into a specific account to ensure her daughter's safe return and avoid any legal action.

The man also allegedly claimed that his intention was to spare the family from the trauma of their daughter being implicated in a sex trafficking case.

"My mother was a teacher at a government girls' junior high school in Achnera, Agra. After receiving the call, she panicked and contacted me. I asked for the number from which the call came, and upon checking, I noticed it had a +92 prefix. I told her it was a scam, but she remained extremely anxious and started feeling unwell," Dipanshu explained.

"I reassured her and informed her that I had spoken to my sister, who was fine and attending college. However, my mother's health continued to decline. When she returned home from school, she complained of pain. We gave her something to drink, but her condition worsened, and she passed away," he added.

Additional Commissioner of Police, Mayank Tiwari, confirmed that the family filed a complaint on Thursday.
