Fraud : Man Arrested in Rs 5 Lakh Cyber Fraud Case by Kochi City Cyber Police
The Kochi City Cyber Police have arrested a man for allegedly defrauding an individual of ₹5 lakh through cyber fraud.
The suspect, identified as Muhammed Thufail from Koduvally in Kozhikode, is accused of deceiving the victim by initially posing as an employee of a courier company. According to the police, Muhammed contacted the victim, claiming that a courier sent from the victim's Mumbai address to Shanghai, China, containing ATM cards, a laptop, cash, and MDMA, had been intercepted.
Subsequently, Muhammed allegedly conducted a video call, impersonating an officer from the Mumbai Cybercrime Police. During the call, he informed the victim that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered a case against him. To clear his name, the victim was reportedly instructed to transfer ₹5 lakh to an account purportedly belonging to a notary, for the court to verify his account. The victim complied with the request.
Realizing the fraud, the victim reported the incident in February through the national crime reporting portal and the fraud helpline number 1930. Following the report, a case initially filed by the Ernakulam Town South Police was transferred to the Kochi City Cyber Police.
Muhammed was traced to Kozhikode after an investigation based on online transactions and information obtained from the national crime reporting portal. The investigation has now expanded to other states, according to cyber police sources.
