UEFA Nations League 2026: September 29 Spain supreme , England win
The second matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League concluded on September 29 with ten matches across Leagues A, B and C. The biggest results came in Group A3, where Spain continued their perfect start with a convincing 4-1 victory over Croatia, while England recovered from their opening defeat to beat Czechia 2-0. Switzerland also produced an emphatic victory over Scotland, while Slovenia, Albania, Iceland and Slovakia recorded important wins.
Spain continue impressive start: Spain strengthened their position in Group A3 with a 4-1 victory over Croatia. Lamine Yamal was the star of the evening, scoring twice as Spain followed their 3-2 victory over England in the opening round with another three points. Marc Pubill and Nico Williams were also on the scoresheet, while Croatia's only goal came from Dion Beljo. Spain have therefore won both of their opening matches and extended their unbeaten run to 40 matches.
England bounce back against Czechia: England registered their first Nations League victory by defeating Czechia 2-0 in Prague. The hosts were reduced to ten men when Pavel Šulc was sent off in the first half. England took advantage after the interval, with Anthony Gordon opening the scoring in the 47th minute before captain Harry Kane doubled the lead in the 69th minute. After their 3-2 defeat to Spain in the opening match, the result gave England their first three points of the campaign.
Switzerland overpower Scotland: Switzerland produced one of the day's most convincing performances, beating Scotland 3-0 at Hampden Park in Group B1. Scotland's task became more difficult when Jack Hendry was sent off early in the match. Switzerland took advantage of their numerical superiority, with Ricardo Rodríguez, Nico Elvedi and Zeki Amdouni scoring to secure a comprehensive victory. Switzerland now have six points from two matches.
Slovenia defeat North Macedonia: Slovenia claimed their first victory of the campaign with a 2-0 home win over North Macedonia. After their goalless draw with Scotland in the opening round, Slovenia converted their opportunities more effectively and collected three valuable points. North Macedonia, meanwhile, suffered their second successive defeat after losing 0-3 to Switzerland.
Slovakia edge Kazakhstan: In Group C3, Slovakia defeated Kazakhstan 2-1. Slovakia had already beaten Moldova in their opening fixture and maintained their winning start. Kazakhstan, who drew with the Faroe Islands in their first match, suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
Albania beat San Marino: Albania recorded another victory in Group C1, defeating San Marino 3-0 away from home. Albania had begun the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Belarus and therefore moved to six points after two matches. San Marino, following their earlier 0-7 defeat to Finland, remain without a point.
Iceland win in Luxembourg: Iceland also registered their first victory of the campaign with a 3-0 away win over Luxembourg in Group C4. Iceland had drawn 1-1 with Estonia in their opening fixture, making this a significant three-point result. Luxembourg, who had defeated Bulgaria in their first match, were unable to reproduce that performance.
Finland held by Belarus: Finland were held to a 0-0 draw by Belarus in Group C1. Finland had opened their campaign with a remarkable 7-0 victory over San Marino, but Belarus defended successfully to earn their first point after losing 0-2 to Albania.
Moldova and Faroe Islands draw: Group C3 also produced a 1-1 draw between Moldova and the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands followed their opening 1-1 draw against Kazakhstan with another stalemate, while Moldova earned their first point after losing 0-2 to Slovakia.
Bulgaria and Estonia share points: Bulgaria and Estonia finished 0-0 in Group C4. Estonia had previously drawn with Iceland, while Bulgaria had lost to Luxembourg in their opening match. The result therefore left both sides still searching for their first victory of the league phase.
Overall, September 29 brought the second matchday of the 2026/27 Nations League to a close. Spain and England dominated the headlines in Group A3, with Spain maintaining their 100% record and England recovering from their opening defeat. Switzerland also moved to six points in Group B1, while Albania and Slovakia maintained winning starts in League C. The league phase now resumes on October 1, with fixtures including Germany vs Serbia, France vs Italy, Denmark vs Portugal and Republic of Ireland vs Austria.
